Will my bank need probate?
Pick the bank and roughly how much was in the account. We’ll tell you whether you’re likely to need a Grant of Probate to access it.
Pick a bank and enter a rough balance to see whether probate is likely to be needed.
How banks decide
- Each bank sets its own “small estate” threshold - the maximum balance they will release without probate.
- Even below the threshold, the bank can still ask for probate if the case is unusual.
- If the estate includes property, you’ll almost always need probate - regardless of the bank balance.

The thresholds shown are the latest published figures we have on record and can change at any time. Always confirm with the bank in writing.
